Names of nearly 74 lakh voters removed after SIR in Gujarat

The Election Commission of India has concluded a massive "cleaning" exercise of the electoral rolls in Gujarat, resulting in the removal of 73.73 lakh voters. According to the draft electoral rolls released on Friday, the state's total voter base has shrunk significantly from 5.08 crore to 4.34 crore.

Gujarat Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Hareet Shukla confirmed that this Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was aimed at ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the rolls by removing ineligible entries that had accumulated over the years.

The detailed breakdown of the deletions reveals that a vast majority of the names belonged to voters who had either permanently migrated or were deceased. Specifically, 40.25 lakh individuals were found to have shifted outside the state, while 18.07 lakh deceased voters were struck off.

Additionally, the exercise identified 9.69 lakh absent voters and 3.81 lakh duplicate entries where individuals were registered in two different locations. These findings highlight the scale of demographic shifts and administrative overlaps addressed during the month-long field verification.
